UWEC alumni start company to reduce carbon emissions

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – A company started by two alumni of UW-Eau Claire is making progress to improve the planet one tree at a time.

After spending a few years in the corporate world, UWEC alumni Matt Kallstrom and Anthony Meshnick have changed direction.

“I’ve gotten to this point where I feel like I need something that’s going to fill me up,” Kallstrom said. “I took the plunge to really follow my passion, which is in the environment. “

It was then that the company The Carbon Offset was born.

The goal is to help businesses and individuals reduce their carbon footprint around the world by planting trees.

“What I love about the environment is that it doesn’t matter who you are,” Kallstrom said. “You can have a huge bank account, you can have all of your beliefs, your background and it’s going to affect you. “

Since its launch about a year ago, more than 250,000 trees have been planted at 48 different project sites.

“We have 44 nationally,” Kallstrom said. “The closest is in Wisconsin, it’s called Chequamegon-Nicolet, and then we have four international locations. Haiti, Mozambique, Madagascar and Senegal.

The company has partners around the world, including right here in Eau Claire.

Another Blugold alumnus and owner of Midwest Meals, Daniel Beck, said it feels natural to support their mission.

“One of our core values as a company is to be a good person,” said Beck. “Every time someone places an order online it could be anything from a meal to whatever they want, we plant a tree on their behalf. “

In the few months that have passed since Beck stepped aboard, he has seen for the first time the difference that can be made.

“So we just walked through 1,600 planted trees and we started at the end of 2021,” Beck said.

Help the planet one tree at a time,

“Planting trees provides employment for people, especially in international projects. Kallstrom said. “It improves the environment, it gives animals a home, it improves the quality of the water, improves the quality of the soil.”

The Carbon Offset Company today added another Eau Claire company to their list. Eau Claire Ford will also contribute to the company’s mission of planting trees around the world.
